Sensible Drinking skills

 

Plan ahead. It can help to plan how much you are going to drink before you go out and try to stick to the plan. Here’s an example:

Pete plans to drink 2 pints (4 units) of beer tonight. He’s going out at 8.00pm and plans to return at 12 midnight. Pete is aware that his liver can process 1 unit of alcohol each hour. He plans to drink 1 pint every 2 hours

 

Try some of these tips to help you make your drink last:

Meadow2-200Pace yourself. Take smaller sips and sip less often. If your drink is in your hand, you’ll drink it faster. Try putting your glass down on the table or bar after each sip

 

Do something else that will distract you. This could be chatting, playing pool or darts etc, listening to music, dancing or eating. Go easy on the crisps and peanuts though as they make you thirsty

 

Copy the slow drinker. Is there someone who you’re out with who drinks slowly? Try to copy the pace that they drink and don’t pick up your glass until they do

 

Change your drink. Drinks that remind you of heavy drinking days will likely give you the urge to drink like that again. Try a lower strength beer for a change. Be adventurous and try something new but be aware of the strengths of the drinks you’re ordering

 

Add more mixer to spirits. If you drink spirits try a different one and make it a long drink with tonic or orange. The longer the drink, the slower the rate of your drinking

 

Eat before you drink. Food helps absorb alcohol so for a nice meal before you go out to the pubs/clubs, it’ll give you more energy to enjoy yourself too

 

Alternate your drinks with soft drinks. If you can, try to have ‘spacers’ in between drinks, so alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks – it’ll stop you getting dehydrated and you’ll have less of a hangover the next day

 

Watch what you drink. Cogeners are the chemicals that give drinks their taste and aroma. Clear or light liquers contains fewer cogeners than darker drinks. Also cheaper drinks tend to contain more cogeners. Generally, more cogeners increase hangover symptoms

The bubbles found in sparkling wines and fizzy mixers are carbon dioxide. They encourage the alcohol into the blood stream much quicker so you feel drunk faster

 

Avoid rounds. Drinking in rounds can mean we end up drinking more than we want to. If you can’t avoid it then try ordering a soft drink from time to time or when it's your turn to go to the bar
